Who doesn’t love watching ambitious self-builders wrangle tight budgets and deadlines on Grand Designs? But how many of us have the time or inclination to tackle our own self-build project? If you love the idea of a bespoke, luxury home, but don’t want to devote years of your life to its creation, how about buying a ready-to-go ‘grand design’ home?
This luxury home in Buckinghamshire, constructed on behalf of the current owner, has just gone on sale. Designed for the 21st century home buyer, 16 Westfield Road in Beaconsfield, known as The White House, has five-bedrooms and offers almost 12,000 sq ft of accommodation over four floors.

‘When you build homes for yourself you build them too elaborately, and that’s certainly what I did with this one!’ says Geoff Thomas, a developer by trade. ‘It was a very expensive house because everything is top quality.’
His favourite feature of the house is the piano nobile – the ‘noble floor’ – located on the first floor (as is traditional, so that any preparations for soirées can be taken care of ‘below stairs’). At The White House, ‘below stairs’ means the lower ground floor prep kitchen, complete with separate entrance for caterers. When entertaining guests, dinner arrives at the first-floor – which has a has a large drawing room complete with a bar, circular window and terrace – via the lift.
