Get inspired for your next kitchen makeover with the Grand Designs expert guide to the hottest kitchen trends for this year…
1. Multi-functional islands
Evolving from a room that was traditionally cloistered away and hidden from the guests, kitchens are now a space that welcomes them.
Communal, open-plan kitchens are on the rise, as places for friends and family to relax, hang out, chat and eat. Moreover, kitchen islands provide the perfect area to congregate around.
Although, the large, block island style is losing favour slightly, with alternative islands coming in.
Take this statement island from Naked Kitchens, made from a single slab of dark marble on a rich walnut trestle frame.
It makes the kitchen feel lighter and airier than a solid structure would. Bonus points for the open plan shelving.
It’s also multi-functional as it can act as a breakfast bar, work station, food preparation area, or something else entirely!

2. Bold backsplashes
Use your kitchen as a canvas with a feature print in place of traditional tiling. Bold and intricate backsplashes are in for 2025, with it being a creative part of the space. There are plenty of unique ways to make a stamp on the area.
Nat Maks is Natascha Maksimovic, a Kent-based wallpaper maker who uses the ancient art form of ‘Suminagashi’ marbling, which means ‘floating ink’.
Listed as an endangered craft by the Heritage Crafts Association, Natasha creates her organic marbling process by dropping colours onto the water surface, then placing paper directly on the water surface.
Each piece is unique and can be transformed into anything from headboards to backsplashes.

3. Smart kitchens
Technology has upped its impact within the home in recent years, and the kitchen has not been immune to that.
From helping to save you time, streamline tasks and improving the cooking experience, it’s hard to imagine the kitchen without the gadgets.
In 2025 hot water taps, smart sound systems and lighting will become commonplace.
In the same way that home coffee machines, ice dispensers, and air fryers became technology staples in the early 2010s, the focus is now on the smart tech behind the basics.
Whether it’s lighting that changes depending on the time of day, voice activated sounds and lighting through a home system or ‘Alexa’ device, or even a built-in specialist system, smart kitchens are the way forward.
Statistics show that 90% of new kitchen enquiries now include pricing up a boiling hot water tap.
Therefore, showcasing that homeowners are prioritising convenience and updated technology into their new homes.

4. Sustainability and style
The growing trend for sustainability in the kitchen is set to continue into 2025, as we strive to make better choices to reduce food waste, and invest in long-lasting and hard-wearing materials as part of our kitchen design to ensure longevity.
The World Counts states that “roughly a third of the world’s food is wasted. That’s about 1.3 billion tonnes a year”.
And this is across the whole life cycle, from production to consumption. “35% of the wasted food is simply thrown out by supermarkets, shops, and households. Much of it is still perfectly fit for eating”.
Less of a kitchen trend and more of an imperative need, we must look at ways to reduce food waste within our homes.
As well as simple checks like setting your fridge between 0-5 degrees Celsius, getting savvy with planning and efficiently using your freezer for batch cooking, you can turn to tech to help.
Zwilling has created a food storage system with vacuum technology and smart inventory tracking called Fresh & Save.
So, how does it work? You get a series of (well-designed) food storage containers in different shapes and sizes that come with a cordless vacuum pump, which Zwilling says “keeps food fresh for up to five times longer”.
Stackable, they’re a great choice for small kitchens, too.
The containers come with a QR code you can scan and connect to its free app to track your food’s shelf life and its Best Before or Use By date.
Constantly calculating how long the vacuum sealed foods can be kept, you’ll get reminders to your phone for when things need to be eaten.
5. Warm wood
While in some ways kitchen trends are embracing modernity, in others they’re reverting back to more traditional times as the warm cosy hub of the house.
This includes copper pans on display on hooks, mixed metals, and plenty of warm-hued natural wood.
As we use our homes to tap into all our senses to relax, cosiness is key.
Think rich textures, maximalism, where nothing is hidden away and an old table and chairs to pitch up at.
In 2025, wood will see a big comeback and the more lived-in, the better – kitchens are the workhorse of the house, and this style means wear and tear will add character, rather than look scruffy.

6. Time for texture
Texture is having a real moment in 2025. From our bathrooms and bedrooms, to living rooms and kitchens, the extra detail is creating bespoke designs and it’s never been more popular.
Louisa Swannell, Head of Creative Design at Walls and Floors explains: “Textured tiles and glossy finishes are set to lead kitchen and bathroom design trends in 2025, seamlessly combining functionality with elegance.
From the artisanal charm of Zellige tiles to the refined look of fluted designs, these options bring depth, character, and a unique touch to walls
Their tactile surfaces create a multi-sensory experience, transforming any space into a design statement.
“Fluted tiles, with their grooved and ribbed patterns, are particularly sought after for their architectural allure, adding linear texture that plays with light and shadow for added dimension.”
Where texture is trending in worktops, walls and flooring, we love the idea of textured cabinetry.
This fluted style from Harvey Jones is subtle but fits the trend perfectly and adds another dimension to the classic kitchen cupboards.

7. Power to the pantry
The popularity of the pantry has been rising throughout the 2020s, but its set to reach its peak in 2025 as pantries become not only a lusted after part of the kitchen, but an essential.
In the same way that we’re harping back to traditions in the layout of the kitchen, the classic staple of a pantry is also returning.
Hailed as being as sought after as a kitchen island, a pantry is a real selling point for houses.
Gadgets are now so commonplace within the home that a well-designed storage ticks both the practicality box as well as the chic design one.
Where countertops and cabinets can store coffee stations, air fryers, slow cookers, blenders and more, the pantry is somewhere to keep your premium food products and keep your kitchen clutter-free.

8. Mixed metals
Mixing metals is going to be huge in 2025, bringing a layered and sophisticated feel to your kitchen design.
The beauty of it is, you can choose whatever you prefer. If you like the look of brass faucets paired with matte black cabinet handles, or bronze light fixtures with stainless steel appliances, that’s great.
Balance is key to the trend and to not overdo it. Most interior designers recommend selecting no more than three metal finishes for one room.
It’s a good idea to use primary metal finish for permanent fixtures like faucets and lighting, then use the secondary finish on your drawer, door pulls, towel bars etc.
9. Bold colour schemes
Being brave and bold in life and in décor is the theme for 2025, and the kitchen is no exception to that.
Combine two colours in cabinets like in the example below, or opt for bright colours in your splashback.
Another popular idea for 2025 is to create a feature wall within the kitchen to showcase a bright colour in a more earthy toned space.
Combining brighter corals, pinks or blues with more subtle green, grey or brown creates a stunning contrasting space.
10. Double dishwasher drawers
Modern life is busy and anything that eases that is a win. Hence seeing an uptick in the trend for double dishwasher.
However, this trend isn’t just a fad to be flash, it actually makes a lot of sense. Think dishwasher drawer, rather than two full dishwashers side by side.
Fisher & Paykel has a great version, which is stacked on top of each other, so won’t take up more space than a regular dishwasher.
It does however mean you can wash one drawer while you load the other.
They have the depth to fit full-size dinner plates, meaning you won’t actually need to unload the clean load back into your cupboards, you could just use it in constant rotation.
They run very quietly, use less water and have six settings to wash anything from fine crystal to heavy pans at the touch of a button.

What is the trending colour for kitchen cabinets?
A combination of bold and earthy tones is the popular choice for kitchen cabinets in 2025.
Forest green has been hailed as a favourite pick, bringing nature-inspired vibes to kitchens, making kitchens feel fresh and grounded.
It’s the perfect balance between moody and sophisticated, bringing drama to the heart of the home. Green also pairs beautifully with other neutral colours if you’re wanting a fresh look: think browns, creams, white.
However, if you’re wanting a brighter look, green also looks fantastic with pinks, bright blue and orange, too.
The options really are endless.
What is the kitchen floor trend for 2025?
When it comes to selecting kitchen flooring, it’s important to be confident in your decision as you don’t want to be updating it too often.
The trends for 2025 are similar to recent years, with vinyl/resilient flooring leading the charge, due to its durability and flexibility with varying kitchen styles.
Both hardwood flooring and porcelain tiles come close behind. Coloured floor tiles are also trending, in earthy tones or brighter shades depending on the statement you want to make.
All of these styles will suit any colour scheme and style, and all are timeless enough that they are likely to be trending for many years to come.
