Plot 1: The Blue House, Terry & Olwen

Plot 4: The Block House, Jack & Hannah

Having been priced out of buying in their area, self-build is the only way that Jack and Hannah can afford to get on the housing ladder. Jack is extremely resourceful with his chosen materials and building their home himself saves them a fortune in labour costs. Read more about their self build.

Plot 6: The Hempcrete House, Paul & Blanka

Paul and Blanka are building the cheapest, most sustainable house on the street for an impressive budget by using relatively low-tech, but time-consuming, techniques, with Paul planning to do a lot of the work himself. Read more about their eco-friendly build.

Plot 3: The Box House, Chris & Roxie

Chris and Roxie are one of the youngest couples to design and build their own home on this development. Like many of their generation, they’ve been priced out of the housing market where they live, so they have decided to spend their savings on an innovative and experimental ‘flatpack’ U-Build home. Local couple Peter and Anita have outgrown their modest family home and are unable to afford to upsize locally, so they’ve seized on the opportunity to become pioneers on what will ultimately be the UK’s largest self-build project. Read more on their amazing build.

Garrie is a chartered accountant, and Sue, until recently, was a foster carer. Sue suffers from severe osteoporosis, and their current home, with all its stairs, is now unsuitable for her.

They hope that building a home designed around her needs will improve Sue’s quality of life, and also allow Garrie to fulfil a lifelong dream to build his own home.

Plot 7: The Upside Down House, Sean & Dianna

Sean and Dianna live in Warwickshire and are both engineers. They plan to build a minimalist, open-plan, upside-down house, with most elements being built off-site and bought together to be assembled, but things take an unexpected turn when Dianna accepts a job in Russia and the couple are forced to plan the build over 2000-miles apart.

Pauline and Godfrey are hoping to downsize from their three-floored suburban house in Southampton, to a bespoke single-storey modular dwelling. They settle on a particular construction system that allows their home to be built in a factory and delivered to site. But first they must tackle an unsympathetic mortgage market.
