One of the most effective ways to add security to your home, as well as a feature that can come in handy for al fresco living, the very best outdoor sensor lights can be a real boon as part of your home design.

From super-sensitive lights made to warn off intruders – whether human or animal – to softer lights that combine alertness with good looks, Grand Designs magazine picks five of the best…

1. Ring Floodlight Cam

Ring take a ‘bells and whistles’ approach to home security lights, with features galore. Much more than just a motion-activated light, the Ring Floodlight Cam (£249.99) comes with a HD camera, siren and two-way communication so you can talk to visitors.

If you’re away, it will send alerts to your phone or tablet whenever someone enters your grounds, so you can check the on-demand video and, if you desire, trigger a siren. In other words, it does pretty much everything except bark like a dog.
