A home that won’t cost the earth

Build an iconic eco house using advanced technology, at an affordable price

By Caroline Rodrigues |

Now that sustainability is high on everyone’s agenda, building to exacting standards is a must. And when setting out on your own Grand Designs journey, you’ll want to know that the eco house you commission is not only sustainable but meticulously constructed.

Attention to detail is par for the course at the German company Meisterstueck-HAUS. The company is well known for its sustainable self build and custom build closed panel and post and beam homes.

Why choose wood?

Building sustainably means building in wood. Unlike many other conventional building materials, wood acts as a store for carbon dioxide, reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Meisterstueck-HAUS uses solid structural timber from managed German forests for the walls, ceilings and roofs of its eco houses. Thanks to careful management the timber used is quickly replaced by replanting.

What can I expect from a Meisterstueck eco house?

You can look forward to an all-round approach to your new prefab eco house. Not only is the wood sustainable, but so are the insulation and  dry lining boards, minimising the use of oil- based materials.

When coupled with outstanding levels of air-tightness and state of the art heating, ventilation and smart house systems, these highly insulated houses are very energy efficient. Energy Plus Walls with a U-value of 0.16, and triple glazing come as standard.

What about style?

Flexibility is key, and Meisterstueck-HAUS homes can be built to its standard designs, adapted to suit your requirements, or built to follow bespoke plans from a UK architect. By building using a closed panel or post and beam system, contemporary designs with large glazed areas are possible.

This allows for a large range of bespoke designs and stunning interiors. Your new eco house can be completed in cladding in render, wood or brick slips. And if you want to live on one level, consider Fusion, a flat-roofed design inspired by Bauhaus style, using post and beam construction.

How much does a Meisterstueck-HAUS cost?

Naturally, you’ll want outstanding quality and service at realistic prices. Shell house prices start at about £1,500 per square metre for a basic closed insulated panel design and from around £1,900 for a post and beam shell house. Working with partner UK companies, Meisterstueck-HAUS also supplies  the complete package including groundworks and internal fit-out.

This costs from around £2,600 per square metre for a closed insulated panel system and from around £3,000 per square metre for post and beam. With larger eco houses, economies of scale are possible. Simply supply floor plans and elevations to receive a fixed price, valid for a year once a contract is signed.
