10 best-selling oak dining tables

These timeless designs are proving popular on ufurnish.com

Oak dining tables are a timeless classic. It’s hard to beat the warmth of a natural wood finish, and durability of oak means your dining table will stand the test of time.

Solid oak has obvious appeal, but don’t dismiss oak veneer. It may sound less authentic, but veneer – made by slicing premium cuts of oak and gluing them to a man-made backing board – results in a super tough tabletop hardened against everyday knocks. And it’s often cheaper than solid timber.

If space is limited, consider an extendable dining table to seat occasional guests. The two most common types are those that extend from the centre with the addition of a leaf, usually stored beneath the tabletop, and those that extend from the end, courtesy of a hinged piece of wood that folds up and down as required. A third, but less common type, is the radial – a round table that expands when you rotate it, thanks to a clever mechanism of moving dart-shaped leaves.

There are pros and cons to each type – a leaf extension is usually the most stable, and a radial will cost more because of the engineering involved. A hinged version works well in small spaces where the table needs to be pushed up against a wall. Just be sure to test its sturdiness before buying.
