The corner sofa is here to stay. A modern interpretation of the three-piece suite, the L-shape has become synonymous with open-plan and broken-plan living, since it helps to create zones and natural partitions in bigger living spaces.

They also work in smaller spaces, allowing you to maximise your floor space – they take up less space than a two seater and an accent chair, for example – while still offering ample seating. Opt for a corner sofa with a chaise if it’s less about providing seats and more about lounging. You can usually choose a right- or left-hand chaise, depending on the configuration of your living room.

Before you buy, consider where you will put whichever design you choose. Make sure it will fit into your home and be in proportion to the dimensions of the space. Grey corner sofas remain hugely popular, but as this statement piece continues to take over living rooms, the choice of colours, fabrics and styles continues to grow.

How to measure a corner sofa

Measuring a corner sofa can be a tricky business, but it’s crucial to get it right as otherwise you could be stuck with a sofa far too large for your space. While accuracy is crucial when measuring for any type of sofa, a corner sofa is slightly more complicated.

Your first port of call should be to decide where your corner sofa will fit best in your living room (or whichever room you are hoping to place it). Corner sofa dimensions typically fit into a corner, but you don’t have to stick to this! You could instead place your corner sofa as a room divider in an open-plan space, or create a social area by having your sofa encircle a coffee table.

Once you’ve decided on a spot, get out the measuring tape and see which sizes you’ll have the space for. First, measure the space you have available for the horizontal back of the corner sofa. You need to measure from where the corner crease of the sofa would be, and make sure you take two measurements to get both the length and the depth. Then, measure the free space for the 90 degree outwards section of the corner sofa.

Then you need to know the depth of the whole sofa. To do this, measure outwards from where the corner crease would be at a 45 degree angle from the measurements you took previously.

Knowing measurements is only the beginning though. Sometimes being able to visualise the space available helps you to make a better decision. Therefore, the next step is to take old newspaper or scraps of paper and some masking tape, and lay them out following the measurements you’ve just taken. This way you’ll be able to see how large or small the new corner sofa will be within the space.

Make sure any doors can open without hitting the corner sofa, and that you and others you live with can fit comfortably between the sofa and any coffee tables or other furniture you have in the room.

How to arrange cushions on a corner sofa

When arranging sofa cushions, it’s important to consider the size of your sofa and how many cushions is appropriate. For example, having 10 cushions on a 2-seater sofa would look too much. It’s also important to consider the rest of your space: colour schemes, other furniture, the mood you want to emanate and more.

Start off by creating a strong base, for a corner sofa we would recommend 4-6 cushions, including 2 large cushions, 2 medium cushions and 2 smaller accent cushions. The larger cushions could be placed on either end, the medium ones in the middle, and the accent cushions in the corner.

Another idea is to utilise the corner seat, which generally attracts the most attention, and fill it with eye-catching cushions to make a statement.

If you’re wanting your sofa to look full and plush, fill the whole length with cushions. This is perfect if you like a maximalist look, plus a sofa full of cushions will ensure all of your guests get a comfortable cushion to sit on, lean against or snuggle with. Play around with different patterns and textures to create something unique, yet cohesive with your scheme.
