Take a virtual tour of Walters Way in Lewisham - an innovative self build scheme from the 1980s lead by the late architect Walter Segal.

In the first ever series of Grand Designs back in 1999, Kevin McCloud visited a housing co-op in Brighton, who were working together to create a self build community inspired by the work of architect Walter Segal.

While Segal may not be a household name, his experimentation of self build housing projects in the 1980s has inspired many in the self build community, including Kevin.

There are around 200 Walter Segal homes in the UK, but most notably, he also has two London streets named after him - chosen by the residents after creating their communities using the Segal method.

As part of this year's Open House festival, a series of films has been created to offer a glimpse inside locations of architectural significance in London which might otherwise be out of bounds for the general public. One of these films focuses on the story of Walters Way - a self built street created by Walter Segal and Lewisham Council with a number of self builders.

This neghbourhood of 13 unusual houses sits on land that was once a derelict site where two large houses had stood. Unsuitable for conventional house building because of the hills and large trees, the land was offered to people on Lewisham's housing waiting list who were willing to build their own houses. The self builders had little or no building experience and fitted in construction work at evenings and weekends.
