Known on our website as “from the inside out” Transform Architects provided a contemporary makeover and refurbishment with extensions and internal alterations to create new and improved spaces.
At a cost of circa £300,000, the brief was to remodel and refurbish an existing house built in the 1960s to create a contemporary five-bedroom dwelling that takes advantage of the beautiful hillside views.
The design maximises the site, while considering the impact of the development on the neighbouring dwellings.
Transform Architects used a mixed palette of materials to give visual interest to the building facades, as well as layering of materials to give depth and contrast to the front facades.
We used the existing stone for the ground floor with new lighter materials above including, through colour render in different colours to complement the palette of colours found in the area.
The new/altered elements of the project comprised of 300mm block work cavity wall / timber frame constructions with an insulated concrete slab, a new bespoke staircase and a fully integrated lighting / sound management system that is server-based so that music and movies can be streamed to any room.
As with many of Transform Architects projects, sustainability is key and the project consists of large windows to maximise natural light distribution, new triple A rated appliances and a fully energy efficient central heating system.
The north facing windows face over the valley and have the best scenic views, the windows on the eastern façade are set back within the site and are within the two living rooms and bedrooms two and three, the windows on the western facade are only within the bedroom and ensuite in the roof space and they are at high level to aid in the transfer of light into some of the deeper plan spaces and the windows on the southern façade are designed to take advantage of the solar heat gains. The main living spaces all have south facing windows.
The result is a contemporary makeover that delivers more space whilst demonstrating that there is no building no matter how unattractive that cannot be transformed into a modern, contemporary, energy efficient dwelling that maximises its surroundings.
The quality of high end residential projects such as these is adding to Transform Architects’ superb reputation in providing the very best innovative contemporary designs and makeovers. This has been recognized through awards and commendations for residential designs in recent years.

3D design as standard
With 3d design we enable you and every member of the construction team to view a highly accurate 3D walkthrough of your architectural design. From a single-storey extension to a large newbuild, you can tour the project at will.
By creating our designs in 3D from the start, we help you see and understand the real-life potential of your new space.
Exploring in 3D…
No need for technical know-how or special software – you and every member of the project team can explore and share the 3D design model via the internet, anytime, anywhere. You can switch building layers on and off, make real-time measurements from the model and seek views and ideas of others.
Your 3D model is perfect for generating real, informed discussion and development, so we can design the building you really want. We can develop and amend the model so you and your construction team can always see the latest version.
Clarity in design…
Greater clarity in discussion and preparation means ultimate clarity in the final design. That means no nasty surprises, just great communication, confident construction and outstanding results this what an integrated approach and 3d design bring to a project.
