House Goals: inspiration for your dream home
Author Ruth Slavid's latest book is full of brilliant architect-led renovation projects
Celebrated architectural writer Ruth Slavid has released a new book demonstrating how working with an architect can result in a remarkable home transformation. Published by RIBA Books, House Goals features over 150 illustrations of projects and plans.
‘Transforming a house to suit your needs is always challenging and often stressful but in the right circumstances, with a talented professional alongside, it can be empowering, ennobling and joyful too,’ says Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud, who has written a foreword for the book. ‘This volume is both a guide and inspiration for that journey,’ he continues.
House Goals features an impressive array of case studies, from one-bedroom flats to detached homes in locations stretching from Sussex to Norfolk and Yorkshire to Cheshire, as well as practical advice on working with an architect.
Ruth, who has been writing about architecture for more than 25 years, showcases innovative solutions to common problems homeowners face, whether it’s the need for more space, a layout that caters to modern family needs, better connections to the outdoors or the desire for a more sustainable home.
‘You probably know what is wrong with your house, but do you really know what would make it better?’ says Ruth.
‘The aim of this book is to help in this process and, in particular, to convince you that the result of your efforts is likely to be far more successful if you work with an architect.’
Notable projects include Loft Library by Arboreal Architecture, where 40 linear meters of book storage were created in an end-of-terrace house on a limited budget; and Two and a Half Storey House by Bradley Van Der Straeten, where planning refusals for a loft extension required an innovative approach to creating more space for a growing family in on a central London housing estate.
There’s also Lambeth Marsh House, a two-storey listed terraced house in a conservation area that had been left unoccupied for over 10 years. Fraher & Findlay were tasked with breathing new life into the property while respecting its heritage and restoring some of the historic detailing.
