Grand Designs sofa collection

The Grand Designs range of sofas and armchairs with DFS is sustainable and stylish.

By Christina Chrysostomou | 12 March 2021

The Grand Designs sofa collection at DFS is made in the UK with eco-friendly materials. There’s a choice of three upholstery and cushion fabrics in recycled polyester yarns. Recycled polyfibres from plastic bottles fill the back and scatter cushions. The seat cushions’ filling is Quallofil Blue, a polyester made with 50 per cent recycled plastic from Plastic Bank. FSC-certified timber frames and the frame springs come with a free 15-year guarantee.

Modern Luxury

The Tenby is a contemporary design with a deep seat and low, straight arms. It comes as a left or right-hand facing corner arrangement or as a standard sofa. There are a number of sizes to choose from.

Great for: A big, open-plan living space. Its clean lines and boxy shape make it ideal for a contemporary scheme.

Style with: This sofa looks great with a big Jute or Seagrass rug, a minimalist metal-framed coffee table or the matching footstool from the collection.

Laid-back Living

The Kent sofa is both smart and a comfy place to lay back and relax. It has low arms, button-back detail and stands on feet of solid timber with a raw finish.

Great for: Traditional and modern schemes. The design’s neat proportions make it suitable for both big and smaller rooms. Pair up two matching sofas to create an intimate seating area in front of a fireplace or the TV.

Style with: Scatter cushions with a graphic pattern or bold colour, and add a fine wool throw for cosy elegance.

Vintage Appeal

Edinburgh has a touch of mid-century modern styling. Its splayed arms and wooden feet combine to give this design a more traditional look.

Great for: Creating a modern vintage look in a period home, the Edinburgh Grand is a three-seater with plump seat cushions that works well in a spacious room.

Style with: A wooden coffee table or a design with a glass top and metal frame. Team with a deep-pile wool rug for an extra touch of luxury.

Style with: A set of pale wood side tables and a textured rug.

Eco-conscious furniture

Ben Frost, Furniture Designer at DFS, explains the ethos behind the Grand Designs sofa collection.

What was the inspiration behind the range?

‘It pays homage to English heritage, which is reflected in the names of the furniture; Kent, Edinburgh, Tenby and Farnham, as well as the accent chair, Padstowe, with its coastal charm.’

What considerations have been made to source sustainable elements?

All the components have been chosen to reduce the impact on the environment. Despite using plastic, the fabrics are just as soft as other manmade upholstery products, nor do they compromise the luxury look and feel.’

Where are the fabric suppliers based?

‘The Grand Designs chenille fabric is produced by one of DFS’s trusted suppliers in Belgium, while the weave and velvet fabrics are from a supplier partner in Turkey.’

Are the fabric dyes sustainable?

‘All of the substances in the manufacturing process for the range, including the fabric dyes, are made using OEKO-TEX approved products. OEKO-TEX is an organisation comprising 18 independent test and research institutes, which offers a portfolio of certificates and product labels to verify products which are safe, environmentally friendly, and which have been manufactured in a socially responsible way.’

How can I dispose of my old sofa?

In partnership with Clearabee, DFS have launched a convenient, ‘Sofa Rescue’ scheme where your old sofa can be collected from your home to be recycled. Responsible disposal will always beat the dreaded trip to the tip, both environmentally and in terms of convenience. This option saves you time and energy, not only to transport the furniture, but also filling out household wasted declaration forms (HWDFs).

The goal is to reduce the number of sofas ending up in landfill, and the service now operates across the whole DFS group. Last year approximately 50,000 sofas were collected across the UK, and the company is confident they will beat that total for 2021.
