How pocket doors can create space

Pocket doors simply glide out of view, saving space and extending vistas throughout your home

Open up to the idea of a pocket door system to reap the benefits of these cool sliders. They make a great alternative to hinged doors, whether you’re building a new house or embarking on a smaller renovation project.

Sliding discreetly out of view when opened, they free up space, providing a neat, uncluttered solution. From glazed double doors between living spaces to single solid doors into a cloakroom or en-suite, an Eclisse Sliding Pocket Door System can help achieve a serene spacious feel.

The benefits of a pocket door system

Unlike hinged doors, pocket doors don’t swing open into a room or corridor, so you’ll have more freedom to move around your home and fewer restrictions on where you place furniture.

As any architect or designer will tell you, circulation space – the way we move around our homes – is an essential part of planning. A pocket door system aids that ease of movement, useful for everyone and particularly valid if anyone in your family uses a wheelchair.

Double or single?

With double pocket doors you can divide an open-plan living space in dramatic fashion, closing off one part for a cosier feel or as a quiet space for homework or music practice.

A single pocket door is a plus in tight spaces, like a downstairs WC, dressing room or en suite shower room off a bedroom.

What are my options?

At Eclisse there’s a wide choice of pocket door styles to choose from, including frames for timber doors, tempered glass pocket doors, single and double configurations, telescopic doors where one slides behind another, and pocket door systems that are fire rated. Even curved doors are possible.

How does a pocket door work?

A pocket door system is the discreet option, tucking neatly within the cavity between the two leaves of a stud wall. This is easiest to do when a new stud wall is built, but is also possible with existing walls.

Eclisse pocket doors have a galvanised steel frame that is installed into the studwork, with an overhead running track to carry the door. After fitting, the track is completely concealed and the frame can be plaster boarded and painted.

How do I fit a pocket door?

Pocket door systems come in kit form and could be fitted by an experienced self-builder or competent DIY-er. Bear in mind that the frame must be installed at the finished floor level, or the opening of the door will be disrupted by the floor finish.

Both the Eclisse frame kit and the door come with step-by-step instructions. Watch the online videos, which make assembly easy. A jamb kit is also supplied, though you could opt for the Eclisse Syntesis flush-fitting model, designed for use without architrave of jambs for minimal, contemporary interiors.
