How to create a home gym
Whether it's a basement fitness studio or a treadmill in the living room, start with good kit
Everyday time pressures mean we’ve all had lapses when it comes to getting out to the fitness studio, but creating a home gym is easier than you think. There’s certainly no excuse to skip the workout when your have state-of-the-art, design-led home gym equipment at your disposal…
Creating a home gym
If you’re building your own Grand Design, planning in a fitness studio is well worth considering. When building from scratch, get your architect on board at the start. This way a home gym can be sited in the best position. Think about the views you want when exercising, and whether privacy is a big deal. A garage conversion, extension or a garden room would also make a great home gym.
But creating a home gym doesn’t have to be expensive. Dedicating an existing room to a home gym is a quick and easy way to get set up. Where space is really tight, however, your kit might have to live in the home office, bedroom or large bathroom – so opt for equipment that looks good, as well as delivering a great workout.
Make it work for you
Practicalities include ensuring walls, floors and ceilings can take the weight of home gym equipment; heavy items are best located on the ground floor. If you’ll be working out upstairs, consider reinforcing the floor. Heavy wall equipment is ideally attached to blockwork walls. Good soundproofing will keep the rest of your home peaceful. Factor in sound-insulating plasterboard and specialist gym flooring. And don’t forget the need for good lighting, adjustable heating and ventilation for the sweatier moments.
