During the height of the UK lockdown, Tomaso Boana and Jonas Prišmontas of architecture studio Boano Prišmontas didn’t rest on their laurels and wait for the pandemic to pass – instead, turning their attention to an issue that become prevalent while working from home. With work desks now a necessity for the home, for those who can work from their own abodes, but internal space at a premium, the makers looked to the garden as a space to create a work environment that avoids compromising life at home when not in use.

Their solution? A low-cost, prefabricated garden office with a modular design that can be adapted to fit any garden. Starting from £5,000 for a basic module, Boano Prišmontas imagine a solution for businesses where they save on rent costs for large offices, and invest in garden pods for their employees instead.

Made from digitally fabricated birch plywood modules, the office pod can be put up in a day, requiring no wet trades. The pod’s can be customised to meet needs and space, with the potential to grow infinitely thanks to its modular design. The minimum size is 1.8x2.4m; however, all offices come at a maximum height of 2.5m, ducking under the requirements for planning permission for garden builds.

The build has been designed to be geometrically efficient and uses standard material dimensions in a way that minimises the waste when creating the structure.

Alongside the birch plywood, the standard finish implements a corrugated transparent cladding, ensuring the office is flooded with light, while also offering a modicum of privacy. Wall modules can also be customised to include designs such as peg wall, mirror or plain or decorative wood finishes. The door folds vertically to refrain from creating an obstruction in compact locations.

For a higher-spec finish, insulated panels are used, and glass windows and doors can replace the more affordable elements of the basic office.
