The right plot of land could offer up beautiful vistas from your self build home. These projects, all featured on Grand Designs, were designed with spectacular views in mind.

While the houses of Grand Designs often stick in our minds because of the architecture itself, sometimes its how these homes are situated in their environment that really captures our collective imagination.

However, a house in a beautiful setting isn't just to be enjoyed from the outside, but the indoors too. These seven Grand Designs projects have each made use of their location and orientation to frame picture perfect views of the surrounding landscape.

Harry and Briony Anscombe took inspiration from the home featured in the iconic 1980s movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off for their dramatic self build home in Cornwall.

Much like the house in the film, Harry and Briony's American Modernist-style house includes a steel frame elevation over their sloping plot, allowing for spectacular views over the surrounding tree canopy from the vast windows situated in each corner of the openplan living space.

Dutch barn self build, Lincolnshire

When Nathan and Amye sought to build their own barn-inspired home, a bedroom with a large window framing the view out onto the Lincolnshire countryside was a key design consideration.

Kevin McCloud may have questioned such a large window for such a private space - the bedroom includes an openplan ensuite after all - but as the room is not largely overlooked and has sweeping curtains in place to keep the room darker for longer in the summer months, the resulting space is both practical and something quite spectacular.

Water Tower, London

Leigh Osborne and Graham Voce's budget busting water tower renovation is a memorable build not just for its scale and ambition, but for the views it delivered from its penthouse living room.

While this space may not have the largest windows of the projects featured, the couple designed the room to offer 360 degree panoramic views of London, offering sights of the London Eye, Big Ben and The Shard within these four walls.

Clifftop house, Galloway

Andy and Jeanette's home on the site of a former military listening station perched high on the rugged Galloway cliffs was designed, from one side, to blend into the wild landscape, covered with earth, grass and boulders.

However, facing out on the North Channel, with views as far as Belfast Harbour on a clear day, they opted for a completely glass-fronted build to make the views from this house the core value of the design.

Timber cottage, Cornwall

Originally considering selling their timber cottage in Cornwall for a larger family home, Gregory Kewish and Rebecca Sturrock were convinced to undertake their own Grand Design after getting a glimpse of the views the cottage could potentially offer after climbing up on the roof.

Gregory, an architect, undertook the design and build himself - installing a seven and a half metre-long picture window with a sliding door to provided panoramic views from the living space.

Shipping container house, County Derry

Architect Patrick Bradley built a home on his family's much-treasured farm land in a picturesque spot on a bubbling brook. However, his modern design, made from shipping containers, raised eyebrows for his family, worried it would create an eyesore on their favourite view from their own home.

However, Patrick's agricultural building-inspired design feels at home in this setting, and by stacking the containers in a cruciform arrangement, he's created a dynamic home with panoramic views out onto this rural landscape.

Amphibious house, Buckinghamshire

The clever engineering of Andy and Nicki Bruce's home that transforms it into an 'amphibious house' should the plot ever flood may have been the focus of this Grand Designs episode, but the glass-fronted home's views out onto the River Thames in Buckinghamshire are what make it truly a remarkable home.

‘The wall of glass provides a great view out on to the river,’ said Nicki. ‘We have a swing seat in the sitting room, which both children and adults love.’ A mezzanine level means that the views can also be enjoyed from the main bedroom.
