Gutters are the unsung heroes of any house, ensuring the smooth flow of water into drains and away from trouble spots. But is metal guttering really a worthwhile upgrade from plastic? We take a look…

Making a long-term investment

There are numerous guttering solutions on the market, but only one that really offers a combination of performance, cost-effectiveness and longevity. Rather than throwing up a cheap solution, consider the long-term integrity of the home you’re building.

Guttering is one of those elements you want to install and then forget, relying on it to do its job.

Metal guttering gives you that peace of mind as it’s robust and longer-lasting - especially modern metals such as galvanised steel - than many alternatives.

Don’t let it rain on your parade

When planning a grand design, you don’t want to let the side down with ugly, functional guttering. Happily, zinc or copper guttering doesn’t just deliver high performance, it looks very stylish, providing a modern, contemporary finish.

The look of the copper will mature, but not at the expense of its durability. In fact, copper develops a patina that hinders the development of fungi and algae that can cause blockages in other gutters. If a metallic look doesn’t fit with your aesthetic plans, the latest range from Rainclear now comes in white.

Metal or plastic?

While plastic can be cheaper, that comes with a hidden cost. Actually, maybe it’s not so hidden. Plastic often deforms in extreme weather conditions – which are becoming increasingly common due to the effects of global warming.

UV exposure can damage plastic gutters and the integrity of joints and seams too, while metal guttering sustains less damage from UV.

It will not crack, fade or peel and has low thermal expansion compared to plastic.

But perhaps the big issue is the sustainability of metal guttering as opposed to the alternatives.

Galvanised steel rainwater systems like those provided by Rainclear utilise a large percentage of recycled material, while the gutters are 100% recyclable once they come to the end of their use – bear in mind that the copper and zinc used in these gutters has a life expectancy of over 50 years.
